Send an anonymous text to a cell phone in Brazil

Ghost delivers your text to any Brazilian mobile without showing your number. A standard text costs 1 credit ($0.20), there is no subscription, and you can send it from a browser on any phone or computer. Brazilian networks put their own sender on texts that come from abroad, so the person sees an unfamiliar number, never yours.

What a text to Brazil costs

One SMS segment to a Brazilian mobile costs 1 credit ($0.20). A segment holds 160 characters of plain text, and nothing is added to the start of texts to Brazil, so all 160 are yours. Portuguese is the catch: é and à are in the basic SMS alphabet, but á, â, ã, ç, ê, í, ó, ô, õ and ú are not, and any one of them switches the whole text to 70-character segments. The table shows what that does to the cost.

How to type a Brazilian mobile number

Written locally

(xx) 9xxxx-xxxx

Type in Ghost

+55 xx 9xxxx xxxx

  1. Open Ghost in your browser or the Android app.
  2. Choose Brazil (+55) in the country list and type the mobile number.
  3. Write your text, check the credits shown under it, and send.

Choose Brazil, then type the two-digit area code (DDD) followed by the nine-digit number. Every Brazilian mobile number starts with 9 after the area code; landlines have eight digits there, so an eight-digit number is not a mobile. Leave out the 0 and the two-digit carrier code you would dial for a long-distance call inside Brazil, and do not type 55 again.

What the person in Brazil sees

  • Texts to Brazil go out through Ghost’s international carrier partner from a US (+1) number. Brazilian networks do not keep that sender: it can arrive as a short code or as another random number. Either way, your own number is not shown.
  • Nothing is added to the start of the text, and nothing in it says who you are unless you write it.
  • Replying from their messages app does not reach you. If you want an answer, switch on a Reply Link: they open it in a browser and send you one reply, still without seeing your number.
  • Some Brazilian networks swap accented letters for plain ones, and some do not support the 70-character Unicode mode at all. A text without accents or emoji is the most predictable.
  • Texts that promote contests or telecom services, adult content or drugs are not carried to Brazil, and the electoral court (TSE) bars some political campaign messages.

Writing a text in Portuguese

Brazilians text in Portuguese, and most words with a tilde or an accent fall outside the basic SMS alphabet. Which letters you type decides how much fits in a segment.

Portuguese, with accents

Oi! A bicicleta ainda está à venda? Posso buscar no sábado de manhã, se der.

UCS-2, 76 characters, 2 segments: 2 credits ($0.40)

Switched to UCS-2 by: á ã

The à is in the basic alphabet, but á and ã are not, so this text is sent in 70-character segments and is too long for one.

Portuguese, without accents

Oi! A bicicleta ainda esta a venda? Posso buscar no sabado de manha, se der.

GSM-7, 76 characters, 1 segment: 1 credit ($0.20)

Typed without accents, the same message stays in the basic alphabet and fits in one 160-character segment.

Portuguese, with é only

Boa noite! Aqui é o vizinho do 32. Seu carro ficou com o farol aceso.

GSM-7, 69 characters, 1 segment: 1 credit ($0.20)

é is one of the few accented letters in the basic SMS alphabet, so this note keeps 160-character segments. Swap in a word with ã or ç and it drops to 70.

When people in Brazil keep their number private

Buying and selling on OLX

OLX is Brazil’s biggest classifieds site for used goods, cars and services, which means texting strangers about prices and pickups. Message the seller through Ghost first and give your own number only once you trust them. Write the meeting point out in words: Ghost texts cannot contain links.

A note to a neighbor in your building

Telling the neighbor in apartment 32 that their car lights are on, or that their music carries at night, is easier without starting a thread on your own phone. Keep it polite: the law section below is about what you write, not about the hidden number.

Brazilian law on anonymous texts

No Brazilian law we found makes texting without showing your number a crime in itself. The Constitution protects free expression while adding that anonymity is not permitted (article 5, IV: “sendo vedado o anonimato”); that is a constitutional principle, not a criminal offence. What can be a crime is the content: threats (article 147 of the Penal Code), stalking someone repeatedly “por qualquer meio” (147-A), psychological violence against a woman (147-B), and calúnia, difamação and injúria (138 to 140). The Não Me Perturbe list lets people block telemarketing calls from phone companies and payroll-loan banks; it covers calls, not texts.

Got a text you did not want?

Brazil has no national number for forwarding scam texts. Anatel’s advice is to complain to your mobile operator first and keep the protocol number, then register the complaint with Anatel in the Anatel Consumidor app or website, or by calling 1331 (free, weekdays 8am to 8pm). If you lost money, file a boletim de ocorrência with your state’s Polícia Civil. To stop texts sent through Ghost, add your number on the stop page.

Questions and answers

A text of up to 160 plain characters costs 1 credit ($0.20). Longer texts are charged per segment, and a single á, ã, ç or emoji shortens each segment to 70 characters. Ghost shows the cost before you send.

Not yours. Ghost sends texts to Brazil from a US (+1) number, and Brazilian networks replace it with a short code or another number of their own, so the sender looks unfamiliar. Nothing identifies you unless you put it in the text.

Not by replying in their messages app: the number they see does not lead back to you. Add a Reply Link when you send, and they can open it in a browser and send you one reply within 7 days, without seeing your number.

Yes. After choosing Brazil, type the two-digit DDD and the full nine-digit mobile number, which starts with 9. Leave out the leading 0, any carrier code and the 55.

No law we found makes hiding your number a crime, although the Constitution says anonymity is not permitted when expressing opinions. Threats, stalking and insults are crimes under the Penal Code whatever number shows, and Ghost hides your number from the recipient, not from lawful requests by the authorities.
