Send an anonymous text to a Finnish mobile
Ghost delivers your text to any mobile in Finland without showing your number. A standard text costs 1 credit ($0.20), there is no subscription, and you can send it from a browser on any phone or computer. Finnish ä and ö are in the basic SMS alphabet, so a text in Finnish usually keeps the full 160 characters.
What a text to Finland costs
One SMS segment to a Finnish mobile costs 1 credit ($0.20). A segment holds 160 characters of plain text, and texts to Finland start with “GHOST:”, which counts toward that. ä, ö and å, capitals included, are all in the basic SMS alphabet, so Finnish and Swedish texts cost nothing extra for them. The € sign is too, but it counts as two characters. The quotation mark ” used in Finnish, the curly apostrophe ’ and emoji are not: any one of them switches the whole text to 70-character segments.

How to type a Finnish mobile number
Written locally
04x xxxxxxx
Type in Ghost
+358 4x xxxxxxx
- Open Ghost in your browser or the Android app.
- Choose Finland (+358) in the country list and type the mobile number.
- Write your text, check the credits shown under it, and send.
Choose Finland, then type the number without the 0 at the front, so 040 … becomes 40 … and 050 … becomes 50 …. Finnish mobiles start with 04 or 050. They are not all the same length, so type every digit you were given. Numbers starting 049 are for machine-to-machine use, not phones.
What the person in Finland sees
- The text arrives as an ordinary SMS from a Ghost mobile number. Your own number is not shown anywhere in it.
- It starts with “GHOST:”, so they can tell it came through Ghost. Nothing in it says who you are unless you write it.
- Finland tightened its rules on scam texts in 2026. Since 4 May, operators block texts arriving from abroad that show a Finnish +358 number or a sender name, and texts from business messaging services whose sender cannot be verified are shown as “Tuntematon” (Unknown) or blocked. From 2 November 2026 such unverified texts with a sender name can be blocked or relabelled “Roskaposti” (Spam).
- Traficom, the Finnish regulator, says these changes do not affect messages between ordinary mobile subscriptions. A Ghost text comes from a mobile number rather than a sender name, but the networks have the last word: if delivery matters, send a test to a phone you control in Finland first.
- Replying from their messages app does not reach you. If you want an answer, switch on a Reply Link: they open it in a browser and send you one reply, still without seeing your number.
Writing a text for Finland
Finnish and Swedish are Finland’s two national languages, and both use ä, ö and å, which all fit the basic SMS alphabet. Punctuation is what can make a text cost more.
Finnish
Hei, onko pyörä vielä myynnissä? Voisin hakea sen lauantaina ja maksaa 80 € käteisellä.GSM-7, 94 characters, 1 segment: 1 credit ($0.20)
ä and ö are in the basic SMS alphabet, so this text stays at 160 characters a segment. The € sign counts as two characters.
Swedish
Hej! Är lägenheten fortfarande ledig? Jag kan komma på visning på torsdag efter klockan 17.GSM-7, 98 characters, 1 segment: 1 credit ($0.20)
Swedish å, ä and ö, capitals included, are in the basic alphabet too, so this text also stays at 160 characters a segment.
Finnish, with ” quotation marks
Kiitos! Jätin paketin ovesi viereen, se on merkitty nimellä ”Virtanen”.UCS-2, 78 characters, 2 segments: 2 credits ($0.40)
Switched to UCS-2 by: ”
The ” marks are outside the basic alphabet, so this short text is sent in 70-character segments and needs two. With plain " marks it fits in one.
When people in Finland keep their number private
Buying and selling on Tori
Tori.fi is Finland’s number one general online marketplace, where people buy and sell second-hand goods with each other, so a deal there usually means contacting a stranger. Text the seller through Ghost to agree a price and a pickup time, and give your own number only once you are happy to.
Flats and cars
Asking about a flat on Oikotie or a used car on Nettiauto means writing to landlords and sellers you don’t know. Ghost lets you ask about the rent, a viewing or a test drive first, without handing out your mobile number.
A note to a neighbour
Letting a neighbour know their car lights are on in the yard is easier without starting a thread on your own phone. Keep it polite: Finnish law cares about harassing or threatening messages, not about the number being hidden.
Finnish law on anonymous texts
Sending a text without showing your number is not an offence in itself. What you send matters: repeatedly messaging someone to harass them is a breach of the peace of communications (viestintärauhan rikkominen) under chapter 24, section 1 a of the Criminal Code, threats are covered by chapter 25, section 7 (laiton uhkaus) and stalking by chapter 25, section 7 a (vainoaminen). Defamation is in chapter 24, section 9, and sending a sexual message or image to someone can be sexual harassment under chapter 20, section 6. Marketing texts to individuals need prior consent under section 200 of the Act on Electronic Communications Services.
Got a text you did not want?
If a text looks like a scam, report it to the National Cyber Security Centre Finland (NCSC-FI, part of Traficom) with its online form. If you paid money or gave your bank details, contact your bank at once and file a police report, which you can do online. To stop texts sent through Ghost, add your number on the stop page.
Questions and answers
A text of up to 160 plain characters costs 1 credit ($0.20), including the “GHOST:” at the start. Longer texts are charged per segment, and a ” quotation mark, a curly apostrophe or an emoji shortens each segment to 70 characters, while ä, ö and å cost nothing extra. Ghost shows the cost before you send.
No. Choose Finland and type the number without its first 0, so a number starting 040 starts with 40 in Ghost and one starting 050 starts with 50.
The 2026 rules target texts from abroad that show a Finnish number or a sender name, and business texts whose sender cannot be verified. Traficom says messages between ordinary mobile subscriptions are not affected. A Ghost text comes from a mobile number, but the networks decide.
Hiding your number is not an offence in itself. Harassing someone with repeated messages, threatening them or stalking them is, under the Finnish Criminal Code, whether or not your number shows.
