- Plain text only. Standard SMS characters are supported, up to 10 message segments. Emoji and some special characters are not.

What the recipient sees
Your text arrives as an ordinary SMS from a sender that isn't your phone number. The recipient can read it in their usual messaging app, but they can't see your number, save it to their contacts or call it back. Nothing about your phone or SIM travels with the message.
Texts to numbers in the United States, Canada and Europe begin with "GHOST:". That tells the recipient the message came through Ghost, not who wrote it. If you want them to know it's you, sign it; if you'd rather stay anonymous, keep personal details out of the text. How number masking works
Where to get a promo code
Ghost gives away promo codes on its Facebook page. A code is five letters or numbers, and each one sends one free text. Codes are shared publicly, so a popular one may already be used by the time you try it: the form tells you when that happened. Some codes also expire after a set date.
You don't need an account to use a code, and you are never asked for your own phone number. The only details you enter are the code, the recipient's number and your message.
What the free text can't do
One code, one text
A promo code sends a single message. Once it has been used, it stops working for everyone.
No replies through Ghost
The free text has no Reply Link, so the recipient has no way to answer you through Ghost.
No links
Messages containing a web address, a "www." or a bare domain such as example.com are refused. Email addresses are fine.
Standard SMS characters only
Letters, numbers and common punctuation. Emoji are not supported. Long messages are split into segments, up to 10.
Some numbers can’t be reached
Emergency service numbers are blocked, and so is anyone who has asked not to receive texts from Ghost.
Use it the way it's meant to be used
A free anonymous text suits the moments when giving out your number feels like too much: confirming a pickup with a marketplace buyer, sending a kind note to a friend, or passing on a message to someone you don't know well yet. Our guide to sending anonymous SMS safely covers how to word it so it doesn't alarm the person reading it.
It is not a way around someone who has blocked you or asked you to stop. Harassment, threats, scams and impersonation are against Ghost's terms and can be illegal. Masking hides your number from the recipient, not from Ghost or from lawful legal process: Ghost keeps the records it needs to prevent abuse and responds to valid legal requests. Anyone who doesn't want texts from Ghost can block them at ghostsms.online/stop.
Sending more than one text
For regular use, open Ghost in your browser and create an account with an email address and a password, or install the Android app and sign up there the same way. Neither asks for your phone number. Both add things the free text doesn't have: message history, Reply Links so people can answer you, and, in the browser, scheduled sending.
You pay with credits, bought in packs. There is no subscription and credits never expire. In the browser you pay with PayPal (in India, with Razorpay in rupees); in the Android app, through Google Play.
A text to the US, Canada, the UK or Australia costs 1 credit per segment, as do many others; some countries cost more, and the app shows the price before you send. See pricing by country
Free SMS questions
Yes. A valid promo code sends one text at no cost. You do not enter a card, create an account or install anything. To send more, you buy credits, which never expire.
Ghost posts free promo codes on its Facebook page. Each code is five characters long and sends one message. Some codes also have an expiry date.
Usually because someone has already used it, and the page tells you how long ago that was. A code can also have expired, or it may have been typed wrong. Codes are letters and numbers only.
No. The text is delivered from a sender that is not your number, so the recipient cannot see, save or call it. Texts to the US, Canada and Europe start with "GHOST:", which tells them the message came through Ghost but not who wrote it.
Not through Ghost. Replies need a Reply Link, which you can add when you send from the Ghost web app or Android app with credits. Each Reply Link lets the recipient send you one reply within 7 days, delivered to your phone as a normal text.
No. Ghost sends plain SMS only, and any message that contains a web address is refused. Emoji and some special characters are not supported either.
